Rediscovering Life's Simple Joys

Seven years of relentless work have led me to this unexpected pause. Now, with a sudden shift in my circumstances, I've had the opportunity to reassess my life. A profound realization has emerged: the importance of a simple, joyful life, shared with the people I love the most. I long for a life filled with genuine happiness, where family bonds are cherished and moments are savoured.

Being with my children has filled my heart with love and gratitude. It's a painful reminder that time is slipping through our fingers. I want to slow down, enjoy these precious moments, and build lasting memories with my growing family.

I'm committed to being a more patient and loving father. I'll make a conscious effort to connect with my children on a deeper level, to listen patiently to their thoughts and feelings. I'll trade yelling for understanding, and replace harsh words with gentle guidance. Together, we'll create a loving and supportive environment where they can grow into a kind, joyful, humble, and God-fearing individuals.

While being unemployed or parado in Spain presented its challenges, it also provided a unique opportunity for reflection and renewal. Yet, as the days turned into weeks, I began to appreciate the unexpected silver lining. It allowed me to slow down, to truly rest and recharge. The most precious gift, however, was the opportunity to spend quality time with my family. The laughter, the shared experiences, and the simple act of being present as a loving father filled my heart with joy.

A Day of Love and Literature

Every year on April 23rd, Barcelona comes alive with the vibrant celebration of La Diada de Sant Jordi, or St. George's Day. This unique tradition, often compared to Valentine's Day, involves a delightful exchange of gifts: men traditionally give women roses, while women present men with books. The city's streets are transformed into a sea of red roses and literary treasures, with countless stalls lining the sidewalks.

The legend of Saint George slaying a dragon to save a princess is central to the celebration. St. James Square, with its iconic statue of the saint, is a popular gathering place during this festive day.

This year, I followed the tradition and gifted my wife a pair of red roses (though I would have loved to give her three, my wallet had other plans!). For my daughter, Kayla, I chose a book, a sequel to her favourite series, which she adored. And my son, Keiron, was thrilled to receive a pair of Invizimals cards to add to his collection. In return, I was showered with kisses from my loved ones, making for a truly blissful evening.

Jipper & Malyn Engagement Session

 

The late morning sun cast a warm glow over the picturesque Jardins de Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer as I prepared to capture the engagement of Jipper and Malyn. While the bright light presented a slight challenge, it ultimately resulted in a collection of natural and intimate portraits.

This charming garden, one of my favourite locations in Barcelona, offers a diverse array of backdrops. From vibrant flowerbeds to tranquil ponds, every corner is a potential photo opportunity. The bridge, in particular, provides a romantic setting for couples' portraits.

Malyn, a naturally shy individual, paired perfectly with Jipper's easy going demeanour. Together, they created a dynamic and affectionate couple. Initially hesitant in front of the camera, they soon relaxed and embraced the moment. Their genuine connection and playful interactions made my job as a photographer a joy.

Juggling both photography and videography simultaneously was no easy feat, but the couple's willingness to cooperate and their natural chemistry made the process seamless. I'm thrilled with the results and can't wait to share more of their story.

The Universe Within

As I delve into the depths of my mind, doubt creeps in, a flickering shadow cast by the thalamus. It questions my significance, my impact on others. Am I merely a speck in the universe, overlooked and insignificant? Or am I a unique individual with something meaningful to offer the world?

People often seem absorbed in their own lives, their own personal struggles and triumphs. But perhaps, beneath the surface, there’s a shared humanity, a connection that transcends individual experiences. I yearn to understand others, to see the world through their eyes, to bridge the gap between our inner universes. Together, we could create a vast and interconnected cosmos, filled with boundless hope.

I recently finished The Fault in Our Stars, John Green’s fourth novel. Despite its weighty subject matter, it’s surprisingly easy to read. I was so captivated by the story that I paused my A Song of Ice and Fire series to finish it.

I was genuinely moved by the book’s blend of humour and heart. It’s a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the human condition. The main characters, Hazel Grace and Augustus, are two teenagers with cancer who navigate life with a refreshing blend of wit and wisdom. Their journey is both heart-breaking and heart-warming, filled with moments of laughter and tears.

I particularly admire Hazel Grace’s sharp wit and Augustus’s charming irreverence. And Isaac, the character who has lost his sight, reminds us that true beauty lies beneath the surface. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a well-written and emotionally resonant story.

A Summer Adventure

My mom had been working tirelessly and decided to have a break. She treated us with a trip to Port Aventura, a magical theme park just outside Barcelona. It was an unforgettable experience, filled with laughter, excitement, and cherished memories. From thrilling roller coasters to enchanting shows, we immersed ourselves in a world of wonder and adventure.

Port Aventura is a sprawling theme park with themed areas like the Far West, Mexico, China, Mediterranean and Polynesia. It offers a diverse range of attractions, from family-friendly rides to heart-pounding roller coasters. While Kayla enjoyed the milder rides, the adrenaline-pumping Dragon Khan and Shambahala, Europe's tallest coaster, were a bit too intense for her taste. Below you'll see a picture of it.

The adrenaline rush from the rides was incredible, but it was the park's stunning architecture that truly captivated me. I spent hours photographing the intricate details, capturing the essence of each themed area. My mom, while not an adrenaline junkie, happily accompanied Kayla and me, and together we captured many beautiful moments. We can't wait to return to Port Aventura, to once again immerse ourselves in its magic and make new memories.

A Week in Review: Books, Family, and Joy

A Deep Dive into Westeros

I've been lost in the intricate world of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Currently, I'm making my way through A Feast for Crows, the fourth book in the series. After being captivated by HBO's Game of Thrones, I knew I had to experience the original story. Martin's masterful storytelling and complex characters have me hooked.

Family Time and Literary Pursuits

This past weekend was a delightful mix of work and family. Not only did my wife and I have opportunities to earn extra income – she as an emcee at a wedding reception and me as a photographer – but we also cherished quality time with our kids. We visited FNAC and treated them to new books. Our daughter, Kayla, chose La Reina del Sueño (The Dream Queen), a 288-page book that she devoured in just three days! She's already eager for the next instalment in the six-book series. I'm amazed by her enthusiasm for reading and her budding writing skills, as she's already penning short stories and articles.

The Simple Joys of Family

Family is the heart of my world. I cherish every moment spent with them, whether it's a quiet evening at home or a fun-filled adventure. Their presence fills my life with joy, even in the most mundane of moments. I can’t imagine a life without them. Love for them is a complex emotion, a mix of simple affection and profound devotion.

Home Sweet Nightmare

Two days of relentless rain have turned our bedroom into a disaster zone. It has become a casualty of our neighbour's careless renovation. Water is seeping through the ceiling, saturating the walls, and threatening to destroy our belongings. Our insurance company is unable to assist until the source of the problem is addressed. Unfortunately, the tenants are unaware of the property owner, leaving us in a frustrating limbo. To prevent electrical hazards, we've been forced to live without lights for a couple of days. Despite our best efforts to resolve the issue, we're hitting roadblocks at every turn. We feel trapped in a nightmare with no end in sight.

We can't catch a break! First, the boiler decided to take a vacation, leaving us shivering. Then, a radiator in Kayla's room sprung a leak, causing significant damage to the floor. To top it all off, the blinds are stuck, the shower is flooding the bathroom, and Keiron's closet is still waiting to be installed. It's incredibly frustrating to deal with these constant issues, especially when they seem to pile up all at once. We're exhausted and overwhelmed.

My house is a war zone! The broken appliances, leaky pipes, and damaged walls are wreaking havoc on my sanity. I desperately need a superhero, a handyman or manitas who can swoop in and save the day. With their expertise, I can finally reclaim my home and restore peace and order.

While life throws its difficult challenges, I've learned to prioritize and maintain order in my real home, my family. It's my source of comfort and stability, especially during turbulent times. While I may face challenges as a husband and father, I find solace in the order within my home. It's a small victory, but it brings me peace of mind. 

Maintaining a home is a constant challenge. While we may seek the help of a handyman for physical repairs, the true foundation of a home lies in our spiritual well-being. Jesus Christ, the ultimate builder, offers us the grace and love to heal our broken relationships and find lasting peace. He offers us the tools to construct a life filled with love, joy, and purpose. By inviting Him into our homes, we invite hope, healing, and eternal life.

John 14:23

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”

   

A Love Letter to Filipinos: Appreciation and Understanding Beyond the Surface

It's incredibly kind of him to express his appreciation, or perhaps a deeper understanding, of us. After all, true appreciation often stems from genuine understanding. Understanding, however, is no easy feat. It requires time, effort, and a willingness to look beyond surface appearances. As Filipinos, we may have our flaws, but we often mask them with smiles, tireless work, and unwavering perseverance. This is especially true for overseas Filipino workers, who sacrifice so much to support their families back home. We toil tirelessly, not just for financial gain, but to provide our loved ones with a better life—a life filled with smiles, comfort, quality education, and brighter prospects. Indeed, family is at the heart of our culture. Our strong family ties and values are what truly define us as Filipinos.

Filipinos, wherever they may be, are known for their vibrant celebrations. Whether it's a birthday, a wedding, or any other special occasion, we gather to share joy, laughter, and delicious food. Unlike many other cultures, we often incorporate elaborate programs, heartfelt tributes, and lively karaoke sessions into our celebrations. While some may view our enthusiasm as excessive noise, it's important to understand the deeper meaning behind these gatherings. These events are opportunities to strengthen family bonds, reminisce with loved ones, and escape the stresses of daily life. For many Filipinos, especially overseas workers, these celebrations provide much-needed respite from the challenges of living and working abroad.

As Dr Harwell pointed out, many Americans are burdened by debt. Unfortunately, this is a growing concern for Filipinos as well. In our pursuit of a better life, we often sacrifice our well-being and financial stability. It's crucial to find a balance between work and personal life, and to prioritize our mental and emotional health. By cherishing our relationships, embracing our cultural traditions, and practicing gratitude, we can find joy and fulfilment, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

Thank you, Dr Harwell, for your thoughtful letter. Your time with us allowed you to see beyond the surface and gain a deeper understanding of our culture. We appreciate your insightful perspective. We hope that your letter will be widely read by people of all nationalities, fostering greater understanding and appreciation. Perhaps then, they too will see us through your eyes.

Last Spring

Entering the iron gates of Pedralbes Palace Gardens, you will be welcomed by Mediterrània, a marble female nude at the centre of an elegant oval pond. A slight grassy slope with laurels and orange trees behind and a small waterfall complete a set of great beauty in its simplicity.

A fortunate twist of fate took us there last spring or primavera. Though it wasn't our initial plan, we couldn't have asked for a more exciting family day. The park's breath-taking scenery left us in awe.

Inside, we follow up the main path leading us to the Royal Palace, located at the back of the park. In front of the palace, in the centre square presides a sculpture of a woman holding her son in her arms. It happened to be Queen Isabel II presenting her son, Alfons XII, to Barcelona. There, we stopped a bit and I took some pictures.

Aside from the numerous sculptures, in these gardens you will also see different variety of plants and trees, flowers, shrubs and bushes. I really like the shots I took my wife and kids inside the bamboo groves. For some time, I thought they felt like models of a perfume ad shown in the television. Anyway, it was another good family day.

Embracing Life, One Day at a Time

Bienvenido or welcome 2013! Another year has flown by, and we find ourselves fortunate to be alive and well. We all have 365 days ahead of us, a blank slate filled with endless possibilities. Some will approach this year with intention, planning their days wisely and working towards specific goals. Others may choose a more carefree approach, letting life guide them. Personally, I'll strike a balance between the two. While I have my own aspirations and resolutions, I'm also open to unexpected opportunities. After all, setting goals can be motivating, but it's equally important to embrace spontaneity and flexibility. Life without challenges and the drive to overcome them would be rather dull.

Salmons swim upstream against powerful currents to spawn, while wildebeest undertake perilous migrations in search of sustenance. These creatures demonstrate a remarkable drive and resilience, pushing their limits to ensure the survival of their species. Unlike these animals, we humans often find ourselves stuck in a rut, clinging to the familiar and fearing the unknown. We may hesitate to take risks or pursue new opportunities, settling for a stagnant existence. It's crucial to remember that growth and progress often require embracing change.

We should grab the opportunity to explore new places and expand our horizons. Stepping outside our comfort zones and traveling at least once a year can enrich our lives in countless ways. The world is vast and full of wonder. From the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris to the historic sites of Berlin, there are countless destinations to discover. And let's not forget the beauty of the Philippines, with its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted people. While we can, let's seize the day and embark on adventures. Life is fleeting, so let's make the most of it.

Learning is a lifelong journey. Regardless of age, there's always something new to discover and explore. The world is a vast repository of knowledge, from the depths of the Earth to the farthest reaches of the universe. Immerse yourself in documentaries like "The Grizzly Man," "The Lion King," and "The Last Lions," or delve into historical mysteries like "The Mysteries of the Maya," and "Ancient Civilizations." Expand your horizons, feed your curiosity, and unlock the full potential of your mind. It's never too late to learn.

Cherish your loved ones and make time for meaningful connections. When was the last time you shared a cup of coffee or a meal with your family and friends? Simple acts like dining out at a casual restaurant, like Hard Rock Cafe, can create lasting memories. The cost is minimal, but the value is immeasurable.

Watching a movie together can also be a great way to bond and share emotions. Let yourself feel the power of a performance like Anne Hathaway's rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" in Les Misérables. Remember, the strength of family ties can be a source of incredible resilience, as exemplified by the inspiring story of the Spanish family in the film "The Impossible".

As we embark on a new year, it's a great time to set some personal goals. Start by prioritizing your own needs and happiness. It's okay to say no and to set boundaries. Remember, you don't have to please everyone. This is your life, so make it count. Additionally, incorporating daily prayer or meditation can help you stay grounded and grateful for the blessings in your life.

Behind the Glass

Every time I visit Barcelona Zoo, a complex mix of emotions washes over me. A part of me wonders if these animals, confined to their enclosures, are truly living fulfilling lives. While they may be protected from predators, their captivity raises questions about their natural instincts and behaviours.

As I captured this chimpanzee's image through the glass, I couldn't help but notice a hint of sadness in her eyes. It's impossible to truly know what she's feeling, but it's hard not to empathize. Perhaps she's longing for freedom, or simply missing the social interactions and natural environment she's accustomed to. Or maybe she's content in her safe haven, oblivious to the world outside the glass.

Leo & Apple's Wedding

Last month, I had the incredible honour of photographing the wedding of Leo and Apple. These two are simply amazing! Their infectious laughter, playful banter, and unwavering love for each other made the entire day a joy to capture.

Leo, with his quick wit and mischievous grin, kept us all entertained. He was game for anything, even a spontaneous striptease (thankfully, he didn’t quite follow through!). Apple, on the other hand, was a picture of pure emotion. Her tears of joy flowed freely throughout the day, from the church ceremony to the first dance.

It was clear that these two were not just lovers but also best friends. Their genuine connection and unwavering support for each other were evident in every moment.

I’m so grateful to Leo and Apple for trusting me to capture their special day. And a huge shout out to my talented friend and colleague, Dick Arias, for his invaluable assistance.
